Profile B-17 going to Canadair Argus (eventually)
« on: September 28, 2020, 09:57:21 pm »
Today was a day that had me looking at Facebook video, when I stumbled across this one: https://www.facebook.com/flitetest/posts/3442012332531316

Interesting concept, one that is being developed over the last four years by "Rumbuilder" who's developed the design for B-17 and B-29 using what is described as 3/4-inch extruded polystyrene sheets.

I immediately wondered what 4-engine aircraft was used by the RCAF, and my first thought was the Argus. Yes lots of other aircraft (eg, Yukon, etc.) but the Argus had a family connection (one of my uncles served as armorer to be best of my knowledge.)

One thing that sprang to mind immediately if that the wing is much narrower thatn for the B-17, and the Argus is even more so. So the profile model is going to be STHWO (Stand The Heck Way Off) scale.

Right now, I'm looking at what I can find of the B-17 design and I believe that I have found a template for the B-17 and will see if I can create that model first to learn the basics of this before starting on the Argus.

Found a drawing that has the parts outlines. Sad to say, it's not to scale and the parts are not perfect nor at they correctly sized, so I'll have to trace the parts and make sure that the gaps all align. Foam sheet is extruded polystyrene and is one-half in thickness. Going to have to check the Rona shop in Newmarket (north of Green Lane and Yonge) for the one-inch by 2 feet by 8 feet.

Have found a good reproduction shop but the image blown up to proper scale comes out more than 36 inches in width and his default toll setting is 20 inches and I can part things out from the original drawing to fit. Just have to get over one day before he closes and give him the enlargement factor to use.

Got lots of other projects to work on over the winter.
