Title: Retirement but need a trainer type to start -- Festnight DW Hobby T2501 EP Cloud
Post by: byrocat on November 20, 2020, 08:05:32 pm
Been looking around for a good advanced trainer type to ease back into flying after seven years of hiatus. Of course, with COVID, the hobby shops have pretty well been cleaned out and prices for resale or used airplanes is definitely a seller's market.

I checked on Amazon, DHGate and Hobby King to see what's available in a balsa airplane, and found the same design and manufacturer on their websites for about the same price.

Doesn't look to bad a design, though it's a flat-bottomed airfoil and a 51 inch wingspan rather that the 56 inches of most of the trainers that I've built and used over the last 40-plus years.

Just haven't seen anything on the websites on reviews, and am wondering if anyone else has tried this and what their experiences are.

Hi:

It does look ok and the larger diameter wheels should make it easy to taxi on the field. This is another model from the same company and I like how they use a hinged hatch on the underside so as not to detract from its looks. I thought you had bought a Falcon 56 kit? Take care.

Thanks, Don!  I've ordered the one that I posted just to be different. I was thinking of ordering the Sig 1/6th J3 Cub in the clipped wing or regular version. Got a good scale reference at the field in the motor shed (or there was the last time that I was at the field, but I do have lots of pictures from the day we dragged the roof off of the plane.)

Scratch building is also iffy at the moment as all of the local hobby shops appear to be out of balsa and kits for sale on the forums and Facebook are priced out of this world or are iffy by being reqsonably priced..

One day to go and then it's time to pack up my office equipment and clean up the home office, plus there's a pile of meat boxes and 11 cartons in the basement to be pounded flat, along with the shipping box for the 9-cubic-foot freezer that most of the meat went into, plus a bonus package of 25 pounds of bacon.

Well, if I don't see or talk to you or anyone else before Christmas, have a pile of enjoyable activities in a socially distant and reasonable manner!
