Some questions on the 2011 season. Are there any construction changes planned? Will the full span ailerons/elevator rule be looked at as an improvement in durability? As long as there is no wing profile or area change all should be good. As I fly my Formosa a lot more than at just a couple races and it gets bounced around in transit and flying. The tabs are just too fragile.... Can there be a vote? Winter is here and Ive already got my kit so I would like to start building!

27 views and not one reply? Isn't anyone building a Formosa this winter?

Well, I'm not building this year. I managed to have my two racers last the 2010 season.
Really, the only person who can answer your question is the person who makes the rules, Clair.
My opinion is the same as last winter. I see no racing advantage to having full span ailerons so I see no reason to ban them.

I sanded my tip tabs down and glued in some lite ply and then built up the tips with filler to conform to the original shape. Not much of a weight gain and very durable as well.
I'll be doing the same thing to my new Formosa too.

Ed... Thanks for the question about Formosa airframe requirements in 2011. The quick answer is... Yes, there are going to be changes to both the airframe requirements and the construction guidelines. It's necessary and essential for the continued success of the EMFSO Race Series next year. During the race events, on the web and at practice sessions this year, a number of EMFSO members made valid suggestions that should make racing more exciting in the future. Now it is a matter of reviewing all of the postings, notes and emails on this topic. Watch for an update soon. Clair

Great question... Greg. In 2009, one EMFSO member who did not have MAAC Wings participated in the Formosa Demonstration Race at the TEMAC Fun Fly. At the time, Sergio Salvi was a proficient flyer of small light weight models under one kilogram and a student RC pilot learning to fly a heavier four channel T-34 Mentor. He purchased, assembled and prepared a Formosa for racing in the 500 gram class. Everything went well during practice sessions before the demonstration and also at the fun fly. In fact, Lucia, Sergio's wife acted as his spotter. It was a terrific experience for everyone that was involved, but the decision to grant permission was carefully considered by Michael as TEMAC President and by me as Chief Flight Instructor. We both place safety as a high priority, especially with this flying event being a new venture. We also did not want to set an unworkable precedent. The demonstration race was plenty of fun and a learning experience for everyone. This year, Sergio continued to participate in the Formosa Race Series before being awarded MAAC Wings. Next year, racing Formosa model aircraft will be again open to EMFSO members who have acquired appropriate flight skills and are part of a MAAC Wings flight instruction program.
Let's get ready to race in 2011!

Thanks for the information Clair! The reason that I asked about this was that many members have been asking (Bugging) me to race next season. I personally would like to wait a bit longer before participating in the races. I have have flown my FW Formosa (as I like to call it, for you that have not seen it, it's painted luftwaffe green and camo'd, with landing gear, bit different), it's fantastic and flys like a dream! But racing is a bit more challenging and could push some newly acquired skills that I am still developing. [

Ed, The best comment of the week goes to you...
"watching this thread like a hawk."
The Formosa Airframe Requirements and the Construction Guidelines for 2011 are in the proposal stage. A few advance copies will be available this evening at the December Workshop. Let's talk racing. Clair
